        Chris,  I believe you were using a BPE grade pipe.  They sell both
the regular black iron pipe and BPE at my suppliers.  The BPE is a better
grade pipe for holding more pressure, but it does have that protective
coating on it that is just like you describe to get off.  Buying the cheaper
black iron pipe is the easiest method to get out of that clean up - or
smell.  Don't know if the fumes are bad or not.
