It's the Society for Creative Anachronism, officially. We try to recreate the
Middle Ages as they should have been ;-) Think, a Renn Faire, where everyone is a
participant, wandering off into whatever interests them, culturally, as well as in
Arts and Sciences. My particular interests are Smithing, Leatherwork, and Cooking,
and I'm also a Chirurgeon- translation, Medic.
Several of us are on TheForge, and we tend to know other smiths in SCA, as well as
being in communication with others into various other forms of reenactment-
Buckskinners, Civil War, Colonial, etc.
One of our biggest events, the Pennsic War, is just north of Pittsburgh for two
weeks, and it draws a few people, most of whom are there through most of the
event- I think gate this last year (it was the 30th anniversary) was about
13,000....I've met folk there from Australia, France, England, Germany, all over
the world, Knowne and otherwise.
Johan (John Husvar) and I met through this List, and then in person at Pennsic,
and became friends, when I invited him down to eat with us in our Household camp-
we're a Household of Cooks, and he kept showing up for dinner... we finally made
him a member of the Household ;-)
Anyway, it's a very active group, and we can generally go to a reasonably local
event on any weekend. Different events have different themes- Pennsic, for example
is a War between the East Kingdom (more or less NE US) and the Middle Kingdom
(more or less the Midwest) and the loser used to acquire Pittsburgh, but both
sides got tired of losing, so we made it its own Kingdom......We have other events
which might be focussed on dancing, or a Collegium, teaching Medieval Arts and
Sciences. The event I'm inviting you guys to is, obviously, an event focussed on
metal working, but there'll be lots of other activities, too, I'm sure.
If you want to find out more, you can go to our website at www.sca.org. If you'd
like to try an event, as I said, I'm willing to help you guys get started.
Following is from the Autocrat:

This is the quote I
sent to my non SCAdian List "Greetings,
Last night I got the final approval for the
Metal Smith's
Symposium! Therefore I am looking for teachers
for classes. Several
people have sent me email stating that they are
willing to teach, but
we have lots of spaces for you to teach in, so
suggest classes &
teachers for them! We also need some support
personnel, if you are
willing volunteer. Below is the preliminary
information, an official
event announcement will soon be forthcoming.
While this is an SCA event, every one, who
is willing to make an
effort at Medieval garb, is invited.
YIS, Olaf of Trollhiemsfjord "
