At $1.50/lb I'd buy it and then find out what the hole is for.
If the holes were fore and aft (under heel and horn) then I'd say that they
were handling holes used to maneuver the anvil while being forged. But
crosswise (i.e. side to side) sounds like the chain anvil the others have
mentioned. The photo url that was mentioned is a good one showing the chan
makers anvil.
