First don't be afraid to modify the handle.

I find that it's the balance that makes a good hammer.Next the weight and 
handle shape and

thickness. I have large hands and some of the handles from the factory are 
way too big or the wrong

shape. Start by thinning the handle where you grip it and round the top so 
it fits comfortably between

the thumb and forefinger. I have salvaged several hammers that were 
unusable that way.
