I highly recommend Schwartzkopf's book for this reason- Peter got me aware
of forging into black to get a smooth surface and S. got me aware of not
overheating the metal- for every heat in the excercises he either says,
"take a good forging heat" or "apply a uniform red heat" meaning, don't heat
it up enough to get scale.
Bartolucci is also big on this- that's how he can work on a flower all
afternoon without dissolving it or getting it full of cracks.
