Actually one who works with tin or silver is a tinsmith or a 
silversmith.  A whitesmith is one who works iron or steel to finished 
condition with files and polishes and leaves the finished piece "in the 
white".  Or so I've always understood.  I read this somewhere but can't 
recall where.
