Ah!!   See?  I learn again.

  I know it's probably the most basic of starter's mistakes, but I
hadn't thought of over heating the iron to the point of changing the
surface.  Even though I've heard it mentioned here before.  Now when I
start, I'll probably be a little shy about over cooking the
metal...LOL
