Doesn't the gauge depend on not only the load but the length of the run?
A longer run will definetly add resistance.

Also, the wire is sized so that the wire may withstand a short circuit
for enough time without catching fire for the wall breaker to trip. So,
you will find electrical cords only certain sizes and larger when
shopping at the local Home Depot<G>.
