Roger, Will this tape include the tatoos, sweat and leather series
you seemed to hover on so long?? :-) Or is that being called
comtemporary from now on(to protect the innocent - read: those that didn't
make it)?
Sure was a pleasure working with such a fine set up crew as the
UMBA, Metalsmiths, and the Illinois group had organized. I have never
volunteered into any situation with so many competent and willing workers as
I experienced during the conference set up. It showered for three days and
didn't dampen any spirits. I had a blast and made some real friends this
trip. I'm already looking forward to returning to the upper mid west again.
I just rolled in after a 22 hour drive. It's nice to be home
again - but the ride was full of ideas that I could build or dies I could
come up with with all the input gathered at the conference. I'll bet I
spent 6 hours talking about dies, machining, hardening, tempering, shaping,
using, wedging, bolting, etc with Bob Bergman, Clay Spencer, Sid Suedmire,
and Rob Gunther during different opportunities before, during and after the
conference. What a pleasure to cover that topic with such great folks and
swap ideas and be able to clear up so many questions I had going into the
conference on power hammer dies.
I really enjoyed the demo by Alfred Hammerman with the Kuhn and his
unpaired dies making those giant leaves..........sure stimulated some
thought on new die combinations to try for different effects.
One of the demonstrators I enjoyed most was Angelo Bartolucci. He
could easily be considered to be an International Treasure. He took 8
inches of round stock and made two flowers, stems, and leaves with a single
fastening point on the bottom with no welds or stock additions thru other
fastening means. He is my new favorite master to catch next
time............ If you didn't catch pictures of the minatures he
made -there was an entire shop(wood, metal, and forge) in running condition
in the pictures he passed around............awesome.
