Bob:
I was the one asking for pics, info and hopefully a flywheel for my Champion
# 200 1/2. I've saved the catalogue pics you posted and checked out the pics
on your site.
Your # 4.5 has a number of differences from my # 200 1/2 though I have no
idea what the crank and flywheel are supposed to look like on mine. The
automatic feed mechanisms are pretty much the same on yours, the catalogue
pics and mine though the fast feeds are quite a bid different.
The #200 1/2 has two lever feeds along with the automatic. There is the feed
wheel on top but below the top bearing(?) block mine has a second wheel
whick engages and disengages the split nut for the feed screw. Directly
below the split nut wheel is a short feed handle on a fork, centered on the
shaft. I believe this is a fast height adjustment lever rather than a feed
lever and it's permanently engaged. On the right side there is a regular
feed lever about 20" long with a release dog so the feed mechanism can
operate on the automatic without moving the lever.
The only thing that really makes sense to me regarding all the feeds on this
thing is it must be a provision for power but not having the flywheel I
don't know if there was a pully groove in it. It was patented Aug. 9, 1904
for what that may tell us. The Buffalo post drill I have has a "V" belt
groove in the flywheel but no patent date on it.
The #200 1/2 also has a two speed transmission(?) there's a two gear cluster
and release lever on the shaft. Flip the release, slide the cluster to the
other position and you're in second gear. Compared to other post drills I've
seen, this is a pretty complicated and heavy machine, it has quite a few
moving parts and weighs a good 80 lbs. without the flywheel and hand crank.
As a temporary fix for the flywheel I'm going to see if I can find a 12-14"
sheave with a 1" hole. It won't be authentic but it'll get it working again.
I'll build the crank of course. <grin>
Thanks for posting the drawing and pics.
