Lunenburg Foundy, when they were still doing cast iron, had two
rectangular boxes of ca. 1/4" plate, about 3' square by 4' long and
geared up to flat belt drive. Dogable hatch cover. They put casting
in with bits and pieces of old casting and 2x4 offcuts. Totally
deafening.

How about lining your tumbler with used conveyor belt from a rock
crusher or readymix conveyor? Ca. 1/4" to 1/2" thick, abrasion
resistant, fabric reinforced rubber. The 1/2" is stiff enough that a
sleeve inserted from the end of a 50 gal. oil drum whould stay in
palce without glue or fasteners.
