Dave: Here is another 100 year anniversary you can share with our =
smithing friends if you'd like to.
Charles Machine Works, Inc. (Ditch Witch) Perry, Oklahoma is 100 years =
old. =20
The company started as a blacksmith shop in 1902 by German immigrant =
Carl F. Malzahn who with his wife Anna and children came to Oklahoma to =
escape the harsh winters of Maple Leaf, Minnesota.
After Carl's death in 1913, the blacksmith / machine shop continued to =
be operated by his sons Gustave and Charles. Charles Malzahn and his =
son Ed designed the first, small, service line, Ditch Witch trenchers in =
what was then known as Charlie's Machine Shop. Their innovation lead to =
the establishment of a whole new industry. The Malzahn family business =
has now grown into an international corporation; Ed Malzahn is the CEO. =
On the original location of the Malzahn Blacksmith Shop today is The =
Heritage Center. One of the most interesting rooms in this restored =
building is the Anvil Room Conference Center. In this room is a nice =
200 pound anvil from the old shop, a number of smithing tools, and =
historic photos. One of my favorite photos shows a group of folks in =
about 1910 watching an anvil shoot in front of the shop.
