It's always been that way. The difference here is that there
are so many patent applications and limited resources for
researching them, so apparently many bad patents are issued.

Well, this brand of business shennanigan is common enough. I
agree that it sucks, but there's nothing much one can do to
prevent it. It's a matter of attitude within the context of
what our culture allows. We are comparatively free and open,
and so therefore people and businesses have a relatively broad
avenue to traverse. As should be expected, there are those who
will take the morbid path and try to lay claim to things they
have no right to. They will get away with it, perhaps, until
someone drags their sad little carcasses into court and spanks
them but good. Unfortunately, that takes time and money. That,
or people will simply ignore them and they will have to choose
whether it is really worth their time to take one and all into
litigation.
