I think a lot of us have the same issue.
I was reluctant to sell wholesale because I saw all those dollars that it
looked like the retail outlet was making and I wasn't, that is until I did
some retail sales myself.
A couple of fairs that you put heart and soul into only to make gas money
will really reset your perspective on this. You can easily spend weeks
making stock (which of course never really goes to waste) and days
traveling, setting up, and so on.
Of course fairs and markets can be great fun, too, so that can offset some
of the disappointment.
I now have a couple local home and garden stores that go ape over my stuff,
and it's a steady, if modest, source of hassle free income. No, it's not as
much $ as retail, but I know what it takes to maintain a retail presence and
I just can't manage it at this time. Would be fun in the future, maybe!
