[TheForge] Air cylinders

What I bought isn't going to compare well:

four 8" diameter, 10" stroke
one 6" diameter, 10" stroke
one 2.5" diameter, 6" stroke
The lot went for $57.50 on Ebay, plus significantly more in shipping.
There was some confusion on the part of the person running the auction
(who no longer works there....), there were supposed to be six 8" x 10".
Mike threw in the little cylinder. I figured the price was still too
amazing a bargain to pass up! The person-no-longer-working-there gave me
a way too cheap shipping cost ($14 each). I was amazed that Mike stood
by it--when he shipped me the cylinders, he paid UPS more than I paid
him! When he shipped, he was out 6 cylinders and about $50.

After I checked the cylinders out, I sent him a check to make up the
difference. I was really impressed with his attitude. He was absolutely
following through on the deal that a fired former employee set up. All
told, I paid Mike $57.50 and UPS about $200, so he made out all right.

They were supposed to have been used as a door press (i.e. squishing
stuff together to glue up a door). The cylinder walls are non-magnetic
and look like aluminum; the end plates are steel 1 1/4" thick. All
cylinders are double acting.

I'm pretty sure all the cylinders that Blackhawk carries are used (which
I should have said before). They mostly deal in wood machinery. I don't
know if they make porta powers, but doubt it. There's a lot of blackhawk
this and blackhawk that in Iowa.

I'm aiming at using one of the 8" and the 6" to make a self contained
Krause/Nazel type air hammer. I don't know if I will be making it this
winter (and have to move it), or after I get out East. I'm going to
experiment with ram weight a bit to see how many HP it takes to drive
how much weight. My larger phase converter has a 7.5HP motor, and I have
a nice 10HP motor also. I will probably put the 10HP in the converter
and see what kind of hammer I can make with the 7.5HP. Unless, of
course, I end up with three phase.
