[TheForge] water on the fire and how much fuel?

I nearly always use water on the fire, but the amount depends on how much the
cola wants.
I just used some from Cumberland-Elkhorn recently that was the thirstiest coal
I've ever seen.
Seemed as soon as I put the dipper in its place I'd have to pull it out and
douse the fire again.
I usually make sure I have plenty of coal piled on both sides of the fire (2" -
4" above the firepot), and contain the size of the fire with water.
I confine my fire to a pretty small footprint, 4" - 5" diameter.
Most of the things I do in the forge are of a smaller nature, so it works for
me.
I usually have to burn a firepot or two of coal (minimum) before I can get a
handle on how a new batch of coal wants to be handled, and the amount of water
it needs is just one of the things I have to consider.

How many of you regularly use water on you fire when working? Another thing
I have been wondering is how much fuel do you use when building a fire. Do
you have lots and just keep the fire contained with water, or just use
enough fuel to get done what you need to do?
Thank for any comments,
