The other (and preferred, IMHO) school of thought holds that replying above 
the quoted text puts said text out of sight, out of mind. It is then more 
likely to grow, and grow, and grow as the thread progresses, invariably 
unnecessarily, ravenously consuming bandwidth as it goes. With the quoted 
text first, not only does the reply logically and physically follow the 
original comment (I hate having to scroll down to learn the context before 
reading the reply, and separate replies to separate sections are a 
nightmare), but the replier is pointedly reminded to keep the quoted text to 
a minimum.
