Dan, the trick to making straightline cuts is to
1. use both hands to hold the torch with you elbows braced.
2.  listen to the sounds the cut makes as it blows through.
3. use a cutting guide to drag the cutting head along. I've got a 
brass  flatbar for this use.....PF
