When I was getting into blacksmithing my grandfather pointed to his railing 
around his deck. Each 1/2" upright had the traditional spiral. He said "I 
did all the twists on them cold" Since he'd built the house and deck in his 
late 50s, you realize why I never messed with my grandpa!
