Yes!  I've done the same myself.

On a similar note, my emergency power inlet is at the emergency disconnect 
to the heat pump in the back yard.  This means that I don't have to buy 
large quantities of expensive cable.  I just have to remember to not click 
on the heat pump when the generator is running<G>.  The purists will have a 
heart attack due to the liabilities, but (as you say), someone with a brain 
can figure it out easily.  And yes, I do disconnect myself from the street 
before connecting up the generator<G>.  And it's a 220 VAC one<G>.
