Bubba;

   That is a common configuration for a piece of manufacturing
equipment, there would be no hose between it and the unit it is
protecting, the whole filter/reg/oiler would hang on the machine and
be hard piped.

   In your application, I would separate them and do just as you
suggested, USE as short a hose as possible between your oiler and
tool.
