Dave,
While you're asking, find out whether there's any play in the joints =
between cylinders and the frame (on one end) and the ram (on the other). =
Think "ball and socket joint but with very little motion". My point is =
that such a connection with three or more cylinders plumbed in parallel =
should prevent side-loading of the cylinders.

My friend Joe Baer (you UMBA and some of you BAM guys know him) has a=20
4-poster hydraulic press. Put anything of any shape at forging temperature=
=20
between the platens and ... squish, you have a flat something. 400ton =
will=20
do that. It's a monster press. This is not a home made press.
It is single pump and I believe that all four rams are connected in=20
parallel. I'll have to ask.
