S-1 goes by a lot of names. For instance: Seminole Hard, Falcon 6&4,
67-Chisel, Vibro, Excello, Buster, Atha Pneu, Keystone, Alloy Chisel, J.S.
Punch, Top Notch, XL-Chisel , Commando, Par-Exc, Alco-M, Alco-S & Cyclops
S1, Par-EXC., and last but not least Maxtuff.
Or so says Varco Precision Products Co.. Who also happens to have a very
interesting tool steel reference guide at
http://www.varcoprecision.com/tools.htm But, it doesn't list flutagon.
If I remember correctly from a discussion many years ago on this list or
over on the artmetal list, one of the main charateristics of flutagon was
it's shape. That is, the sides were fluted. I also seem to remember that
it was an Atha product in the Atha Pneu family, which is S-1
The S designation means that it is a shock resistant tool steel, whick is
why it is used in puches and chisels and other such tools. The H
designation means that it is a hot working tool steel designed specifically
for working hot materials.
Bottom line is that if you want a good steel for a thin chisel for hot
working, then go for the H-13. I've got chisels made of this stuff and
it's tuff as can be.
