I know that you said you did not think a wax would work, but... Have you ever
tried to use spray on hard shell car wax... ( I use Turtle brand but any should
do)
Might not work, but I do know it will not change the color of the iron.... I
use it on various candle holders I make and get teh same oxide blue that your
trivet has...
