Hi
  I forge brass frequently. I usually use old brass pipe and cut it open 
for stock, unless the piece is large enough to justify hunting down plate. 
You will probably over heat or under heat when starting out. Forge it when 
it starts to get color, stop when it slows moving. Provide ventilation as 
you can burn some of the zinc out and there may be other thing lurking in 
the mix. Brass and bronze have a lot of mixes.
