Mike,

I don't remember him saying anything about relative sizes since I wasn't 
paying that much attention at the time.  It was later when I got 
interested.  I think he welded both ends of the arch.  The bottom one was 
actually a long section of the coil that he bent in the middle.  This was 
welded at all three points.

I would think that you could use any rounds for this.  The diameters of the 
rounds would seem to dictate the width of the fullered neck.
