Dave,

I do alot of stick and tig welding.  I've worked with alot of other
welders in field construction.  I would start with a #10 green filter
lens for both processes.  You might also try a #11 green filter lens for
tig since the arc is more intense.  I tried a #12 once but couldn't see
well enough.  I've on rare occasion seen guys use #9 for arc welding but
I wouldn't recommend it.  I've noticed that  #11 gold coated lenses seem
to look  a bit easier to see through than a #11 green.  These lenses
reflect light thus keeping your eyes cooler etc. but seem to produce
more glare.  They are only made in plastic so must be  handled
accordingly so as to keep them in usable condition.  When they become
scratched they should be discarded.  I was using them exclusively for a
few years but have returned to using green glass sinse I can see much
better through it.  My 2 cents.
