Hey Larry,
You can see a picture of my anvil at Http://www.dfoggknives.com/ .
Click on tools and then click on my business card.
The anvil base rests on an adjustable steel plate in the vertical base
section.
The base has several sets of notches to allow height adjustment from 31" to
38".
My anvils cost $350 plus shipping,
but If Roman needs something to start out bladesmithing, he should look
for
a chunk of surplus steel between 3" to 6" in diameter and several feet long.
The secret to good hammer rebound in an anvil, is the mass of steel directly
below the anvil face.
The 4140 that Bob Bergman is selling sounds great for a bench anvil,
but would work better as a blade anvil by standing it on end and using the
4" face for the anvil surface.
I guy I made a knife for ,at NASA, said it was a function of the
vibrational harmonics of the steel.
Tap a hammer on a good rebounding London pattern anvil above the
main mass of metal (sweet spot)and observe the rebound.
Then tap the hammer near the hardy hole and you will see what I am talking
about.
The best Japanese blade anvils weigh several hundred lbs and have
most of their mass buried in the ground.
Remember , blade , London pattern, armour and bench anvils each have
different optimal uses.
Chuck
