[TheForge] More on towers...

I haven't seen the issue floating around for some time, but I remember
reading an article in Ham Radio Magazine about 15-20 years ago about
constructing a self-supporting monopole tower. the basic construction
involved a pair of 6" steel pipes set in a large foundation with the mast
section pivoting at the top of the of the two support pies. I believe that
the tower was able to support a triband beam in a considerable wind. The
surprising thing about the whole deal was that the greatest load on the mast
was during the erection process. No specific numbers come to mind but I
think that somewhere around twice the stress was placed on the mast during
the trip form somewhat less than horizontal to its raised position. Makes
sense when you figure that the weight of the mast would far outweigh the
wind load.
