[TheForge] Fire pot depth - opinions wanted

I have a stainless steel container (got 2 it for $10.00 at a garage sale) I
keep by the forge. When I close down the fire for the day, all the coal,
ash, etc is shoveled into this pot. Only then I add water to douse the
coal. I do the same thing with my portable forge when demonstrating. The
pot resides underneath the ash dump to help keep the work site clean.

I use water to control the fire, but pull the fire apart and just let it go
out. One thing to think about, for those with cast iron pots is that water
on a hot pot can crack it.....
