Adam,
I find that putting the amount of coal on the fire that you want to burn has
always worked for me. I never use water on the fire. Occasionally I mix fines with
water to make a thick "paste" that I can apply as a thick dome over an existing
fire. Not enough water in this to reach the firepot. When finished, I just rake
the fire out of the pot & it goes out in a few minutes, water not needed here
either.
Using a 12" round firepot that came from centaur in '81.
