I was only trying to point out some of the properties of these substances,
my primary experience is with using them as wood finishes alone and in
combination with various resins to create varnishes. I talk with quite a few
folks who have problems with getting linseed oil finishes to dry correctly
and 99% of the time it is because of to heavy of an application. That being
said it seems to me there are a heck of a lot of recipes for metal finishes
out there that use wax, linseed oil, turpentine, and some Japan Drier in
varying amounts. Mata said he was using " 2 cups of linseed, 1 cup of
turpentine, about 1/4 to 1/3 cup of beeswax and 3 tablespoons of drier " I
guess if I were to create a mixture I would use less linseed oil, more wax,
and less drier. More drier is not better. The turpentine acts as a drier and
as Bruce pointed out boiled linseed oil aIready has drier added. I would
apply with the object slightly warm and wipe of excess. That, or I would try
a specific mixture that someone else has developed that I had some idea of
what the results would be, and follow there application instructions.
