[TheForge] Making a Charcoal Kiln

Well a collier I'm not, but I've read a bit about it.
You don't have to worry too much about air circulation in the stack. =
You're not likely to stack it too tight. When stacking wood, they'd leave =
a hollow in the middle at which to start the burn. They did this by =
putting in a small log, and pulling it out to leave the hollow. This =
formed the initial "flue" as well as the starting point for lighting.
Using a 55 gallon drum, I'd think your chief trouble would be loss of heat =
to the outside.

Bruce;

   Point well taken... do you know how deep they stacked the hardwood
in the drum? Or how high they bank the fire on the sides? I assume
they cross stack or pile the hardwood so as to leave room for gas
movement and heat to reach all the wood.

   Thanks

> This is similar to what others have done, except the barrel is
usually kept standing on end. Rolling may shatter the charcoal to
dust.
