[TheForge] Hydraulic Press Control

Hey Ed,
I haven't received the UMBA tape yet, so I'm not clear as to the advantage
of using an automatic repeat cycle on a hydraulic press. The press works so
much more slowly than a power hammer so that you loose heat to the dies very
rapidly.
I would suspect that Keith uses adjustable limit switches to cycle the
cylinder.
A friend of mine, who used to work at Vickers while in grad school, at one
time told me about an idea he had to build a press with a 12" cylinder. It
would be powered by a large gpm pump and a regenerative valve that cycles
the cylinder return flow directly back into the inflow side. He said that
the cycle timing could approximate the bpm of a power hammer. At those
speeds the billet would stay hot much longer.
I have used both manual and solenoid control valves and I believe foot
controlled micro switches controlling the flow direction of a remote
solenoid valve located on your power pack are the way to go.
