hello;
i received a couple e-mails concerning the neodymium supermagnets and
where i had gotten them.
i collect dead hard drives from the computer stores around here and take
them apart for the various metals that are contained in them. the
magnets used in hard drives are the neodymium supermagnets. these are
ceramic magnets and are extremely strong magnets. i have a 1/2 inche
thick by 8 inches in diameter steel disc stuck to the side of my large
rolling toolbox with six of these magnets. short of hitting the disk
sidewise with a sledgehammer the disk will not move.
there are several warnings concerning these magnets. below are several
quotes from the web.
<begin quote>
WARNING: if you mess with TWO neodymium magnets, you are bound to pinch
your fingers if you let them come together. This REALLY HURTS, it's like
pliers. Also, you should wear safety glasses, since when two NIB magnets
slam together, they tend to launch tiny chips at high velocities. I've
had 3/4" magnets acidentally fall together and be completely shattered.
The things are brittle! NOT FOR UNSUPERVISED CHILDREN!
Always keep these magnets away from computers, floppy disks, credit cards,
wind-up watches, etc.
<end quote>
these magnets will really screw up a computer monitor or television.
