It's a farrier's basic hammer for all hot work, and we usually call them
turning hammers, because we use them to turn a shoe.
The two faces are ideal for most of our work- the convex shape helps bring
the shoe to the slightly acute V we need to make the toe of the shoe, before
we work the branches down the horn. The flat face is obvious, I think.
A ball pein will work as well, but the ball, being somewhat smaller,
requires a bit more accuracy and concentration in order to hit just the
right spot- if you're turning a bunch of shoes, you need a little more
forgiveness when you get tired ;-)
I've been looking for a 22 oz turning hammer for my default hammer, but
haven't found one yet at a reasonable price. Am getting to the point where
I'm considering making one, just so I have exactly the one I want. In the
meantime, my current default hammer is a rather nice 24 oz ball pein- still
just a dab heavy for my preferred feel, but certainly close enough for most
of what I do.

If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it is probably not a
cat.
Never a horse that cain't be rode,
And never a rider who cain't be throwed....
