large scale industrial plasma cutters- 200 amps, 12 foot by 40 foot tables,
that cut a lot of stainless often use an inert gas, like nitrogen, instead
of compressed air. It gives a much better edge on stainless and aluminum.
However, I have always seen them just use a manifold with a whole bunch of
welding tank size tanks. I think it would definitely be more expensive to
use inert gas, even if you were making it yourself, unless your house sits
on some kinda argon well. Lasers use an inert gas also, which is yet another
reason why it is so expensive to have stuff cut with one.
Initially blimps were filled with helium from some kind of underground
helium deposits in texas somewhere? or maybe the government just pumped the
helium into caves for storage, Im not sure. Nonetheless, the idea of
drilling and hitting sheilding gas, like the beverly hillbillies, is a cool
idea. In the end, thought, I think you will find a compressor is the
cheapest, easiest way to go.
