One year in the 70s, I persuaded a small fish plant to deliver all
their fish guts and carcases (after filetting) to a heap in my lower
field. It made spectacularly great fertilzer when composed with
pickup-loads of cow manure from a neighbor. Needless to say, the fish
guys got way ahead of me and the heap turned into a seething mass of
maggots. A couple of years later, that heap was just a pile of clean,
loose fishbones.
(Various yarns omitted regarding bears, fly population, the friends'
dog that had to ride home in a VW beetle after a roll, the 3AM visit
from the Mounties in response to a complaint from the snow plow
operator about herrings on his plow etc. :-)
I do have some nice pig jaws and teeth that are spotless after 10
years out in the weeds.
