Maybe you could contact the demonstrators for advice.

Although the culture is very different, when I worked in Japan in 1995, I 
found it to be a welcoming society.  Different from Jeff, I found that women 
tend to be much less accepted in the business world than men.  However, if 
you 're a good listener and a hard worker(which should come natural in the 
role of an apprentice), I think you'll find it can be a very good 
experience.
