[TheForge] welding cast iron

Roger, If you try to fix it and it fails you may end up with a boat
anchor........but I'd try first before tossing it.
The thing about the vise is it will be soaked in years of cutting
oil. You'll have to grind it out, preheat to 400 degrees to get rid of the
oil in the pours..........then you may have some luck welding it. Can't
hurt to try.
When doing the cast welding whether it's tig or stick......keep the
temperature as low as possible to get it to run, and only stitch weld about
1" long beads, then peen to relieve stress in weld. Let cool slowly, and
grind to a decent finish that doesn't obstruct items in the vice. (at least
that's how I'd do it).
Are you sure it's cast iron? or is it cast steel? The cast iron
will make powder when drilling, and cast steel will make flakes.
