[TheForge] Corn Burners

Living in Southern Ontario and talking to the farmers I know from working in
the local Pioneer village, corn heaters are not worth the investment. A
good wood stove is still the best. There is one for sale around here that
is a self contained exterior wood burning furnace that produces hot water.
The hot water can be used to supply radiant heaters for the shop/house, or
hot water supply.
As far as fuel is concerned, take the truck for a drive around the
industrial section of town and you may find that a number of companies
acutually have piles of old pallets available for you to use, free and
legal. Another idea is to have the local pallet repair company drop off a
truck load to broken pallets to you. My sister and her late husband did
this 5 years ago and got two flatbed loads of pallets for $28.00 Cdn.
Give the local kids $10 to dismantle the pallets with crowbars and hammers.
Also buy a good heavy magnet to pick up the nails.
The other benefit pallet wood is finding some nice material for the wood
working projects. I scrounge the local businesses for maple, oak, pine
boards. Also found with the stuff shipped in from Asia that their junk
wood for pallets is sometimes teak and mahogany (nice xmas gifts this year
from the wood piles).
Have fun... and keep warm this winter

Subject: [TheForge] Corn Burners
It's still hot out, but football season has hit Green Bay and that means
that Old Man Winter isn't all that far away. In that light I'm thinking of
alternative sources of heat for my shop. One thought that has crossed my
mind more than once is to get a direct vent corn burner. Corn is easily
come by up here, as it is in most of the MidWest.
Anyway, does anyone here have any experience with these burners that they'd
like to share? Or even if you don't have one but do know something about
them I'd appreciate hearing.
This is an on-topic post, isn't it? After all, it's about heating the shop
so I can work out there in the winter. Right? <grin>
