[TheForge] Re: Pure Iron Truck Specials.

Junk yard steel is virtually free: wonderful things can be made from it;
but we soon find that working with new steel pays for itself in saved
time. I figured that pure iron would be a similar improvement. Like the
old saying.. " A day late and a dollar short"

Following the Flagstaff AZ 2000 ABANA Conference, and after
reading praises of Pure Iron on this list, I wanted to try hammering it
myself. When I heard the $ minimum / purchase/ shipment of Pure
Iron, that sounded like too big of a "pill", as sample, for me.

I thought we would better wait until the reported Semi-truck load of
Pure Iron coming to La Crosse 2002 ABANA . The Pure Iron that made it
to La Crosse, was a limited selection in form of a small pickup load. We
brought home a $90 sample of Pure Iron.

I can imagine a company like Centaur Forge offering a $50 "Pure Iron
Sampler" in their catalog. Even if overpriced in a small quality, I think
that it would have been nearly as difficult to resist as the impulse buy
"marketing" of putting candy at children's eye level at the grocery
store. I think it is a fair guess that many of the ABANA full time
blacksmiths begin as part time "hobby" blacksmith. We "hobby" blacksmiths
likely comprise a big part of the ABANA membership. My thanks to Centaur
for being willing to supply small users like me.

Apparently to many of us did not feel an overpowering impulse to
order the minimum Pure Iron shipment: without ever having had the
opportunity to heat up and hammer it .

Andy's email post indicates that Pure Iron is selling well in France, but
the trip to Paris would probably be shorter for most of the French
blacksmiths than my trips to La Crosse, Minneapolis, or Des Moines.

Perhaps Pure Iron was available through some of the ABANA chapters, but
if not, then that was a missed opportunity: I don't remember seeing it
offered at the Spring Conferences in Bemidji, or at the Fall Conferences at
Hastings, Minnesota. Nor do I remember seeing P.I . offered for sale or a
hands on demonstration at the Wisconsin / Iowa UMBA events that I attended.
