Not sure if it is correct or not, but I was told by some fellows I know who 
worked on other parts of Timberline back then that the iron work was done 
mostly by non-smith type workers under the direction of a couple of smiths 
out of a shop in Portland.
I do know that lots of WPA type work was done in this manner.
