Dick,
One good piece of advice you could pass along to him would be to join this
list and then start asking questions. We all like to give advice to
newcomers, but with an open ended question like "looking for information on
blacksmithin", where do you start?
So for openers all there is to blacksmithi' is to get a piece of steel hot
and wack it with a hammer. This should raise all sorts of questions about
"how do you get it hot", "how hot is hot", "what kind of hammer", "what
size hammer", "how hard to hit it", etc ...
There are also SOFA and other Ohio smiths here that may be able to help in
a more personal hands on manner. Most conferences include an open forge
area and there never seems to be a shortage of people willing to do a
little instructing to a beginner.

Pass it on.
