Hi Ted, Kind of a loaded question here, but I'll take a shot at it.
Two things to consider is the know condition of the compressor, and
the available power you can muster to run this unit at your shop.......
If the compressor is seized and won't even turn with obvious
mechanical damage to the casing......it may be cheaper to look elsewheres.
If the motor is a 7 1/2 -10 or larger three phase you may not have
the ability to afford to run this large a compressor. Your mentioning multi
stage heads.........two stage might be run with a 5-7 1/2......larger and
you'll be hard pressed to afford that on 240 single phase. If the motor is
a 5 hp, then things are looking good, but the CFM rating of the compressor
may be lower than you anticipate.
If the compressor is known to pump oil - rings and some gaskets
could save the compressor head.
If it turns all but part way mechanically......it could have a rust
ring on the cylinder and just need honing........and again some gaskets.
If it turns and doesn't pump air.......the valves in the head may be
pitted and damaged........which if they aren't available will mean your
looking for a new compressor head.........or learing some new machining
skills. :-)
If the motor and compressor head are shot.........I'd look for
something newer as old tanks can be pitted and they really aren't worth that
much.
If you getting this unit for $100 or less, fine it might be worth
the risk..........if you paying $1000 for it, I'd spend anther $600 and get
a new one.
This has been some quick thoughts on what to look for in a used
compressor and options to consider.
Ralph
