Charcoal is expensive to buy, if you can find it (real charcoal, not 
briquettes, of course).
Making it takes some knowledge.  And time.
On a job where I'd use 6 pounds of coal, I'll use 30 pounds of charcoal.
Showers of sparks are attractive.  Pock marks from being caught in a shower 
of sparks aren't.
