Its cleaner.
You're less likely to burn your stock in the fire, making it easier to work 
multiple pieces, therefore more efficient
Its easier to find
You aren't breathing coal smoke
Your neighbors are less likely to shoot you for stinking up the neighborhood
When you turn it on, you have heat.  When you turn it off, its out.  No 
waiting to coke up or let the fire die.
How's that for reasons.

Of course...I still use coal.
