I have recently been experimenting with different ways to clean copper
without removing material. It seems to take a combination of some sort of
natural acid and salt.
The best thing I have found so far is soy sauce. Just wipe it on and the
tarnish starts going away. Be sure to follow right away with a damp cloth,
maybe even with detergent added, lest you wind up with a nasty multicolored
scum/residue which is very difficult to remove.
