I don't mean to be a walking advertisement for TurboCAD, but these =
packages CAN do 3D rendering to whatever degree of reality you want. See =
the following link for a very simple rendering of the Grasshopper Treadle =
Hammer. This drawing is very jaggy because I reduced it's quality a LOT =
to post it on the Internet. The package can do much better than this:

You can do colors, surface effects (e.g., bricks), chrome, etc. I don't =
recommend DOING these things because they take time. But the potential is =
there if you need it.

In my experience AutoCad or other line drawing tools are usefull for me=20
for layout purposes, but most clients aren't able to make the leap from=20
line drawing to image of what the piece is going to look like. If I=20
could get trained in something that I think would help me display my=20
ideas to my clients, like a 3D graphics imaging software package that's=20
what I would want.
