[TheForge] Drilling terra cotta

I have a birdbath project to do in which I'm thinking of using a large
saucer/dish from a big planter. This dish is about 16"-18" diameter and is
readily available at any number of nurseries or large stores in the lawn
and garden department. I'm thinking of using the terra cotta dishes rather
than the plastic ones.
The birdbath will incorporate a small pump and reservoir for a fountain in
the center.
The question I have is whether or not the terra cotta will drill using a
regular drill (this works on clay pigeons) or a masonry bit. Or will I
have to find a diamond abrasive hole cutter for the task?
The option furthest down on the list is to buy one of the commercial
birdbath tops. I suppose that I could chase down a local potter to make
one for me, complete with hole before firing. But the terra cotta dish
fits the desired look.
